Mr. Andy Abele is the Principal and Owner of TechCompass.  He has over 30 years of Clean Tech experience, including alternative fuels, electric vehicle drivetrains, energy storage, fuel cells, renewable energy resources, Smart Grid, and supporting infrastructure. 

Through TechCompass, Mr. Abele offers his expertise in technology commercialization, R&D management, strategic planning, business development, and corporate communications.


As Senior Technology Strategist for UCLA’s Institute for Technology Advancement, Mr. Abele provided strategic direction on energy and environmental technologies to university researchers to accelerate the transition of their discoveries towards commercialization. Among his accomplishments at UCLA are the creation of multi-disciplinary research initiatives in Smart Grid and Electrical Energy Storage.

Prior to joining UCLA, Mr. Abele served as the Chief Technology Officer and Executive Director for Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc., a Tier One automotive supplier of alternative fuel, hydrogen, fuel cell, and hybrid electric vehicle systems.  In this capacity, he directed the engineering R&D department developing alternative fuel and hydrogen systems.  He also created and led the development of hybrid electric vehicle systems for Quantum.  The resulting systems led to a ground-up diesel hybrid electric vehicle for the U.S. Army, known as the “CERV,” and the drive train which is the basis for the Fisker Karma. His other "hats" at Quantum included strategic planning, government relations, and business development.

Previously, Mr. Abele was Manager of the Technology Advancement Office for the South Coast Air Quality Management District. There he led an innovative research, development, and demonstration program focused on clean fuels, fuel cell and electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies.  His early career experience involved developing low emission solutions for fossil fuel-fired power plants while with Applied Utility Systems Corp., Energy Systems Associates, and Energy and Environmental Research Corp.
